Reality is Running Away |
I like gardens, the smell of crayons and fall, baking, untouched snow, coffee shops on every corner, politics, fuzzy socks, satire, bento boxes, IKEA, skirts, Scrabble tiles, and tea. |
This is what a REAL rape prevention campaign looks like
So, like, I don’t know what to think of these PSAs. It reminds me of how on campus right now we have a lot of fliers about advocacy for “gender-based violence”, or sexual assault advocacy/policy changes. I understand the tagline “Men can stop rape.” is designed to shift the dialogue away from victim blaming, because society’s general message is “Victims (often women) can stop rape.” However, I’m not sure if I’m on board with equating males unequivocally as the aggressors, and there’s an unstated assumption in this PSA that women can’t (and don’t) rape. I really like that there’s the queer visibility of the gay male couple saying that men don’t rape, but I’ve never seen the equivalent for a female couple in these sorts of PSAs. I think it’s a dangerous form of misogyny in society where we, because statistically and societally we view women as the victims, assume that they cannot also be the aggressors. This leads to invisibility and a lack of reporting/taking things seriously in cases of lesbian and female-aggressor sexual assault cases, which has an impact of reinforcing some facets of rape culture.

What about women preventing rape too?
*sighs* this could help a lot of women and men.
